Installed the router four months ago and it worked great. Then, all of a sudden, the wireless portion of the router stopped working, but it still works when hard-wired to the computer. I called support and they said it was probably a hardware problem, but in order to utilize my one-year warranty, I had to buy a service contract before they would even consider investigating or replacing the defective unit. So, I could pay $130 for a one-year support warranty to protect my $200 hardware.. That would buy me the privilege to allow them to utilize the warranty that I thought I already had. What a rip-off!

So, you have a hardware warranty, but you have to pay to use it.

I purchased the x4 (R7500v2) on Jan 6, 2016, over the past two weeks the router has been dropping the Internet connection at random intervals from 15 mins to a few hours. Connections drop at least 5 times per day. This is especially annoying since I work from home at times and require a constant internet connection, which is sort of expected in 2016. I've gone through a ton of troubleshooting through forums and support pages with no avail. Finally I caved and decided to open a ticket with Netgear. Turns out I am a few days outside of my "free" 90 day support and in order for Netgear to address any of my concerns, I would need to purchase additional GearHead support. How can I have a 1 year warranty on a product but Netgear won't even answer a question unless it's within 90 days after purchase. This is quickly going to become a very expensive paper weight if I can't figure out how to fix the constant disconnects from the Internet.

Purchased this router hoping for a substantial upgrade from a very old Netgear router that had served me very well for a long time. However, the good feelings I had quickly turned to frustration and eventually made me write this review. Long story short, not long after I got the router installed and working I noticed some issues with my wireless signal. Specifically, the 5GHz portion of the router introduced frequent cutoffs and disconnections to my devices. No problem at all with the 2.4GHz or the wired devices. Having a background in IT, I went through the common troubleshooting steps, factory resetting the device, changing channels, even more obscure items like MTU adjustment and disabling certain features as directed on their self service help system. No change.

I was truly disappointed because many of the features worked very well, and I liked the management UI. Really made tailoring the network performance much easier than my previous router.

Finally, I decided to request an RMA. This was another painful process for an already frustrated consumer that shouldn't have to deal with the steps performed in the first place. The CSR tried to upsell me on a phone support service and, when I declined the extra cost, then tried to get me to follow their online help documents that I had already gone through several times. Finally, an RMA was approved.

You'd think this is where the story would end, but of course not. I was forced to pay a large shipping cost to even have the new router shipped before they received my RMA. How they expect someone to live without a basic router for a week is completely beyond me. Then when the router did arrive, it exhibited the exact same issues as the one that was returned.

At this point I'm fed up with this brand and will not be purchasing another Netgear for myself, nor recommending it for anyone else either. I was even considering purchasing some of the Arlo security cameras, but seeing that they are a Netgear product, I'm out. I'd caution everyone to stay far away from this product and even reconsider Netgear in general if you don't already have a strong attachment to them. A company needs to have either a great product, great customer service, or both....and frankly they appear to have neither.

I'm writing this review after having owned the product for 13 months. It offered fast wifi and wired speeds and great range (fully covered my 2000 sqft split level home). Initial setup was fast and easy as well.

Soon after setting it up I started experiencing some issues with the internet cutting out to some, but not all of my devices (wired and wireless), a simple on/off on the router cleared this up every time. For the first few months, this would occur about once a week, and wasn't a big enough deal that I felt compelled to investigate further. Over time though, the issue became more frequent. My phone and laptop would have great internet access, but the TV got connections issues while playing Netflix - again, a restart of the router fixed it, but it was getting frustrating. About 9 months after ownership this became a daily occurrence, where in order to stream Netflix on my TV, or game online on my Xbox I had to perform a router power cycle.

Two calls to customer service, and hours online at Netgear and other forums, with firmware updates and full resets along the way - the issue persisted.

A bit of a tangent, but I really wasn't a fan Netgear's customer support. The product has a 1 year warranty, though only 90 days of "premium" phone support. To get support you have to create a support ticket, then you get a case number and from there have to call the support line. Well, if it's after 90 days they'll tell you your 90 days of premium support is over, but they're willing to work on your issue "just this one time," then advise you to get their premium phone support. Your other support options are to go to their forums.

When it worked, this router worked great, and I was very please. It's just that it didn't work as frequently as it did, having to restart every day became extremely frustraiting, and having just upgraded to an Ecobee thermostat, I didn't want to be faced with these issues anymore. I've now purchased the Linksys WRT AC3200 Open Source Dual-Band Gigabit Smart Wireless Router with MU-MIMO, Tri-Stream 160 (WRT3200ACM) and Love it - no issues. I don't believe I'll ever purchase or recommend a Netgear product again.
